CMS Concert Festival Information For 8th Grade Students And 7th Grade Honor Band Students
Parents,
Every March middle school band students across the state prepare for and perform in the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment (CPA), which is much like a performance EOC/benchmark for band. During the assessment process, bands perform three prepared pieces and play one piece they have never seen before, a process called sight reading. Four judges, called adjudicators, evaluate the student musicians and the band director as they perform and sight read, then assign a score based on how accurately and musically the students and band director perform. The scores are then compiled and each band is assigned an overall rating of Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor. More importantly, the rating sheet from each adjudicator is filled with helpful comments and feedback that band directors use as a resource to guide students to greater musical achievement throughout the remainder of the year.
Bands in York County are not required to attend CPA, but Clover Middle School bands have been attending for the past several years. We choose to participate in CPA because we feel that it is important to hold ourselves to a high standard of performance. Attending CPA allows us to acquire valuable feedback from music professionals regarding our musical growth. We believe that preparing for and performing at CPA motivates student musicians to reach new levels of technical mastery on their instrument and, more importantly, deepen their understanding of what it truly means to be a contributing part of a musical ensemble. The Clover Middle School band program has been performing at a very high level at CPA for the past several years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our young musicians and their parents.
Music for CPA has been distributed in class, students are expected to practice the material at home on a DAILY basis, even once the pieces become easy for them. consistency is extremely important in the CPA preparation process. Recordings of our CPA pieces are available on the Clover Middle School website and students are encouraged to listen to them as part of their practice routine. Students will be tested on all three pieces on a regular basis between now and our CPA performance in March to insure that everyone is well prepared. Playing at CPA is an honor and a very big responsibility for student musicians.
Typically, there is a need to schedule rehearsals OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS so that every student receives the support and coaching they need to adequately prepare together for this event.

Students will be expected to perform in concert black attire for the events. All students are expected to know their music for the event. Please know students may not be asked to go to the events if they do not know their music.
Times for CPA will most likely be during the school day. Students will be taking a bus to the event. Once times are finalized by the site host information will go out to the students. Parents can attend the CPA event at Nation Ford High School to watch the performance in the auditorium.

Students in this ensemble will be preparing for the state music festival in march. We will be rehearsing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45pm-5:00pm. We might add some rehearsal days the closer we get to our performance. Mr. Gibson will notify all students and parents in advanced of any changes to the schedule this spring. If you have any questions email Mr. Gibson.
Jazz Band Auditions Start Back This Friday 1-11-12. 7am-8:10am
Students will need to attend rehearsal in order to perform. If you are interested in joining jazz band come on Friday morning to audition. If you have any questions email Mr. Gibson.
Region Band Auditions are 1-12-18 at Woodruff High School. Students must provide their own ride to the auditions. If there is a problem with finding transportation please email Mr. GIbson.
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Your child has been selected to audition for region band. Region band is when the best student players from around the area come together to audition for a spot in the region 6 band. Your child has worked very hard the past couple of months preparing for this audition. If they make the region band they will be performing at Converse College on February 22ndand 23rd. I will notify all students of their results within a week of their audition.
Please arrive at Woodruff High School in Woodruff SC an hour before your audition on Saturday January 12th2019.
Some additional information:
- All students will need to have a paper hard copy of the audition solo. Students may not read the solos off of electronic devices in the audition room. Photocopies of solos will not be provided at the audition site – students need to be prepared and bring their own copy.
- All students should arrive at Woodruff High School one hour before scheduled audition time.
- Upon arrival at Woodruff High School, follow signs to locate warm-up room and audition room(s).
- No one will be allowed to play their instruments except during the audition and in the warm-up room.
- When ready to audition, all students will need to check in with their audition room page ten minutes prior to their audition time. Ask your room page if your audition is completed in one or two rooms. Once inside the audition room, students will sign in on a signature list outside their audition room.
- Students must have their audition ticket with them to audition.
- Parents are to stay in the warm up area and wait for your child to complete the audition.
- Do not call or contact Woodruff High School with questions or requests for travel directions. Travel directions are available on the next page. If you have any questions concerning auditions, ask Mr. Gibson.
Please notify Mr. Gibson if transportation will be an issue. It is expected that students are to be taken by a parent or guardian to the event. No buses will be provided to the audition site.
After your child has completed the audition you may take them home.
This is a great opportunity for your child to learn and grow as a young musician. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call or email.
